When I was a little girl I was mesmerized with the idea that beautiful woman-creatures with long hair and fish tails might exist below the sea. I can still remember the Disneyland attraction in Tomorrowland: “The Submarine Voyage” that featured several memaids (I like to call them mermaidens) swimming amongst treasure chests near the conclusion of the ride which was a childhood favorite for me. If you would like to take a quick nostalgic look back to this original ride and its “animatronic creations” please visit: Disney Wiki

So, when I was looking for an inspiration for one of my new gumpasting projects, I decided to create one with a mermaid that was under the sea. My original concept was for just one mermaid to be swimming next to a giant clam shell (see: above photo). That was until my sweet sister, Lila, gave me the perfect aqua-colored cake pedestal. Obviously this gorgeous, ocean-colored stand required more special treatment. Below are the pictures showing what I did to achieve it. As you can see I added two more mermaidens, more fish, seaweed, etc. to finish my under-the-sea project.

A few things to know about my project

I used resin molds for the three mermaiden faces from Holly Products molds. The little fishes I molded by hand and I made the starfish with star cookie cutters.
